Mission Statement π
Up North was created from a simple belief: if something is made from the land, it should give something back to it. Without the land, there is no Up North. Thatβs why from the beginning, a portion of every subscription has been set aside for the land itself.
As a magazine run independently by one person, each issue is made slowly, printed in limited batches, and mailed by hand. The same independence that allows us to publish freely also means we rely entirely on readers β and itβs through those readers that weβre able to give back. A percentage of every subscription is gathered throughout the year in a dedicated conservation fund, which is donated annually to a Canadian environmental organization doing meaningful, hands-on work in protecting the places that inspire this publication.
Our goal is to form an ongoing partnership with one Canadian conservation organization β one that shares our love for the land, water, and wildlife that define this country. By keeping our giving focused, we hope to make our contribution more tangible and consistent, year after year. At the end of each publishing year, full details of the total amount collected and the recipient organization will be shared publicly on this page.
Right now, Up North is in the process of finding that long-term partner. Readers can trust that their support is already making a difference: keeping print alive, supporting independent publishing, and directly funding the protection of the land that makes this magazine possible. From the first story written to the last issue printed each year, this magazine is a thank-you note to the land itself β and with your subscription, that thank-you becomes something lasting.
