About Up North magazine.
Hi there! Let me tell you a bit about why I started Up North Magazine. I’m a 24-year-old outdoor enthusiast & writer from western Canada. With the Rocky Mountains in my own backyard, I’ve always felt connected to the land — the alpine lakes, long, long winters, and endless stretch of boreal forest. I'm also constantly learning about both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous history & culture that shape this region. In Up North, I explore the different ways of life people in Canada experience in relation to the land, seasons, weather, and traditions that tie us to this place.
I’ve always been drawn to the extremes of human connection with nature and Up North is my way of exploring that relationship closer to home, through the lens of Canadian landscapes and life. When I'm outside, I'm hiking, camping, climbing, canoeing, snowshoeing, & the like. Inside my small Northern home, I'm planning trips I may or may not ever take, or reading up on the 1996 Everest disaster or Timothy Treadwell's years in Alaska — two of my favourite outdoor chronicles.
At its heart, Up North also recognizes that these lands carry deep, complex histories. As a publication based in Canada, I’m committed to supporting truth and reconciliation, learning from Indigenous knowledge keepers, and ensuring that the stories told here reflect respect for the people who have cared for these places since time immemorial.
